Description
Ulfberht Viking Sword
Before the Ulfberht swords, most swords were assembled from several parts. Soft iron bars were welded together with steel strips, forged into a blade shape, and then a steel edge was welded onto the sword. The Ulfberht sword was a big leap in both technology and design. It was not made of strips, but of blades of good carbon steel with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords. The design of the sword was also a major improvement. The blade tapered more sharply toward the tip than earlier blades. This meant the sword was closer to the hand and was faster in both striking and recovery than earlier blades.
The etchings on both sides of the blade are exact copies of the original, making the reproduction almost identical. The sword is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced. The handle is made of wood and wrapped in leather. The strong guard is made of steel and the pommel shape is the Brazil nut shape, which was very popular at the time, both among the Vikings and in the rest of Europe.
