Irish Sword with Ring Pommel, incl. Scabbard. 16th Century

This one-handed sword is based on various original finds and drawings of Kerns (ceithern) from the 16th century. The Kerns were light infantry who formed the majority of Irish forces in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. In many conflicts across the British Isles, these Gaelic warriors, mostly mercenaries, proved their fierce fighting spirit.

One of their preferred weapons was a sword with a broad blade and a characteristic ring-shaped pommel, through the center of which the end of the tang was visibly exposed. This unique open ring pommel was relatively typical for Irish swords of the 15. and 16. centuries. Many surviving original examples of this type have been found in archaeological excavations throughout Ireland and can be admired in various museums, including the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin.

Our affordable reconstruction of the iconic Irish-Gaelic ring-pommel sword features a broad, double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel, which is fullered for about two-thirds of its length. The edges are unsharpened, and the full tang is screwed to the pommel. The hilt consists of an approximately 19 cm long, S-shaped guard, a wooden grip tightly wrapped in black leather, and a robust ring pommel.

This beautiful piece of Irish history comes with a black wood/leather scabbard with a straight end, locket, and chape made of steel.

Please note that this late medieval / Renaissance one-handed sword is not suitable for stage combat, but is designed as a collector's item or decorative object. It is also excellently suited as a prop, e.g., to complete your costume, and will simply perfect your transformation into a proud Irish warrior.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly maintaining the blade, e.g., with Ballistol, a universal oil that is excellent for preserving steel goods.
