Spanish Basket-Hilt Rapier with Scabbard

The rapier first appeared around approx. 1500 and remained the favorite sword of the European nobility and upper middle class until the end of the 17th century. This one-handed, usually double-edged Renaissance sword with a long, slim blade and pointed tip was primarily designed as a thrusting weapon, yet it could still be used quite effectively as a cutting weapon. It was mainly used by the nobility for military as well as civilian purposes and was generally equipped with a more or less elaborately designed basket, bell, or hilt, which provided better protection for the hand, whether on the battlefield or in a duel. This sidearm, which was widespread throughout Europe in a wide variety of forms, enjoyed great popularity as a fencing, self-defense, or dueling weapon and eventually became a status symbol and an essential accessory of the wardrobe of any nobleman or officer.

This reconstruction of a classic Spanish Renaissance swept-hilt rapier features a narrow, double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel with a diamond cross-section and a sharp point. The edges are not sharpened, and the full tang is screwed to the pommel. The complex, elegant hilt with an S-shaped quillon, bars, and guard rings is made of stainless steel, as is the pommel. The grip consists of a wooden core wrapped with twisted steel wire.

A black, stitched leather scabbard with a steel locket and chape is included.

Please note that this sword is not suitable for stage combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also excellently suited as a prop, e.g., to complete your costume.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly maintaining the blade, e.g., with Ballistol, a universal oil that is excellent for preserving steel goods.
