The term Damascus steel, Damaststahl, or simply Damascus refers to a composite steel made of two or more different types of steel. The name derives from the Syrian city of Damascus, which is considered a former stronghold and origin of Damascus steel production.
Typically, a hard, high-carbon steel and a soft, low-carbon steel are joined together by repeated forge welding and folding. The high-carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability, and longer edge retention, while the softer steel gives the blade higher elasticity and greater fracture resistance. With this technique, which originated at a time of poor and varying steel qualities, one can thus combine the positive properties of the different steels. Due to the various colorations resulting from varying carbon content, impressive patterns of the alternating layers also emerge, such as twisted, as so-called torsion Damascus, or rose Damascus. Not least because of these patterns, a magic inherent in them was attributed to the Damascus blades of the Middle Ages.
