Description
Boabdil Dagger, Marto
Abu Abdallah Muhammad XII (approx. 1460 – approx. 1533), known to the Castilians as Boabdil, was the twenty-second and last Nasrid ruler of Granada on the Iberian Peninsula. As the son of Abu l-Hasan Ali, Sultan of the Emirate of Granada, Mohammed succeeded him in 1482. Mohammed XII soon tried to gain prestige by invading Castile. He was captured in Lucena in 1483. In the meantime, his father returned to power and then his uncle Muhammad XIII, also known as Abdullah ez Zagal, in 1485. He only obtained his freedom and support to regain his throne in 1487, when he agreed to keep Granada as a tributary kingdom under the Catholic Monarchs and not to intervene in the siege of Málaga (1487), where Málaga was taken by the Christians. At the beginning of 1491, Granada was the only Muslim-ruled city in Spain.
