Hanwei Practical Rapier 109 cm Blade

Practical Rapier, 109 cm Blade

Hanwei offers a range of weapons for the Renaissance fencer, such as the hilt- and cup-hilt rapiers.

For the Schlaeger rapiers, Hanwei used popular swept-hilt designs, adapting them to accommodate Schlaeger blades with lengths of approx. 94 cm (item number SH1099) and approx. 109 cm (item number SH1098). These tapered blades offer exceptional balance compared to conventional cylindrical Schlaeger blades, making the sword much faster. Renaissance-style Hanwei rapiers trace their origins back to early 17th-century Europe, where rapier fencing was an essential part of male education and often used to resolve disputes among nobles. Typically, blades from forging centers like Toledo or Solingen were fitted with hilts by local smiths, resulting in many different variations.

Often, a so-called Main Gauche, as a fencing dagger or left-hand parrying dagger, was used together with the rapier. These daggers allow for better defense against attacking rapier blades, while also offering the chance for a quick counterattack. The fencing schools proliferating in Europe taught fencing with two corresponding weapons. The style and design of the left-hand dagger were often adapted to the rapier and adopted its characteristics to increase effectiveness.

Replacement blades, both sharp and blunt, are available for most rapiers and Main Gauches.
