Medieval One-Handed Sword made of Steel

Medieval single-handed swords, known as knightly swords, were very popular among the sword-wielding nobility in the High and Late Middle Ages. They evolved from spathas in the 10th century, with the Viking sword being considered a transitional form. The crossguard of the medieval single-handed sword is longer than that of early medieval examples, while the blade is somewhat narrower and more pointed.

Single-handed swords with straight blades from the High and Late Middle Ages are colloquially also called knightly swords. This is largely due to the fact that medieval knights were often depicted with a single-handed sword and shield or buckler in illustrations. Examples can be found in the Codex Manesse or the Sachsenspiegel.

The medieval one-handed sword was the knight's close-combat weapon and could be used as a cutting or thrusting weapon depending on its design. Until about the mid-14th century, one-handed swords were wider and had a sharper blade, as they were primarily used as cutting weapons against light chainmail. When plate armor became common, one-handed swords became narrower towards the point (the tip of the sword) and were used as thrusting weapons. One-handed swords were also used on horseback if the polearm broke in battle, was lost, or became unwieldy in dense combat.

The carbon steel blade of the beautiful sword offered here is forged through to the pommel and double-screwed at the hilt end. The grip features a stitched leather wrap and is fitted with a classic disc pommel. Our medieval one-handed sword is characterized by its straight crossguard, which gives the sword its typical cross shape. The blade is not sharpened.

The sword comes WITHOUT a scabbard. A matching scabbard can be purchased separately in our shop (item no. 0101106401).

Please note that this sword is not suitable for stage combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also excellently suited as a prop, e.g., to complete your costume.

The steel used here is not stainless and may show slight signs of corrosion. We recommend regularly maintaining the blade, e.g., with Ballistol, a universal oil that is excellent for preserving steel goods.
